Vulcano

The island of fumaroles: the Gran Cratere della Fossa is an hour's climb — whenever the access traffic light is green.

The island you smell before you see

Vulcano announces itself by smell. The sulphur from the fumaroles reaches you on the hydrofoil, and first-timers either can't bear it or never forget it. It's the closest island to Sicily — 45 minutes from Milazzo — and it gave its name to every volcano on earth: the Romans placed Vulcan's forge here.

The Gran Cratere

The one real reason to climb is to stand on the rim and look in. 391 metres, an hour up volcanic sand, and at the top a crater that genuinely smokes, with sulphur-yellow fumaroles metres from the path. This isn't a symbolic walk: it's one of the few places in Europe where you can legally look into an active volcano from close up. But you only climb when the Municipality of Lipari's traffic light is green. Hours, rules and route →

The rest of the island

Porto di Levante and Porto di Ponente are the two sides of the isthmus: on one, the landings and the water bubbling warm near the shore; on the other, the Black Sands beach. To the south, after a road that seems never to end, sits Gelso: a handful of houses, a lighthouse and a sea that is still empty in August. And the Valle dei Mostri, where lava cooled into shapes that look like animals.

Doing it in a day

This is the easiest island to do in a day from Capo d'Orlando: first hydrofoil from Milazzo, climb the crater early — before the 10:30 window closes — swim at the Black Sands, lunch, and back in the afternoon. With more time, pair it with Lipari, ten minutes away by hydrofoil.

FAQ about Vulcano

Can you climb Vulcano's crater?

Yes, when the municipal traffic light is green: with a red or unlit light the climb is forbidden. From April to October, time windows also exclude the central hours of the day. The rules are set by ordinance of the Municipality of Lipari and must be checked before setting out.
