E-bike hire · Capo d'Orlando

The Nebrodi by e-bike: a thousand metres of climb you don't feel.

There are a thousand metres of ascent between the coast and the park, which is why almost nobody cycles up there. Electric assistance removes that barrier, and the Nebrodi turn into a half-day ride instead of an expedition.

01

Why an e-bike changes everything here

Capo d'Orlando is at sea level; the Nebrodi Park begins at seven hundred metres and rises to the 1,847 of Monte Soro. On an ordinary bike, riding out of here and up to the villages is for the trained: long gradients, hairpins, sun. With a motor helping, the same climb becomes a ride where you look at the view instead of the tarmac. It's the one vehicle that makes this mountain accessible to people who aren't cyclists.

02

Level 1 · The coast, flat

The Andrea Doria seafront, the village of San Gregorio, then east towards Brolo or west to Torrenova: near-flat kilometres by the sea, stopping wherever you like. It's the ride for families, for the first day, or for late afternoon when the sun eases. An hour and a half, with stops.

03

Level 2 · The hill villages

Here it gets good, and this is the route that most justifies the e-bike. You climb towards Naso, Ficarra, Piraino or San Marco d'Alunzio — five or six hundred metres up, real villages with their churches, red marble and viewpoints over the Aeolians. That's twenty kilometres and five hundred metres of ascent: on a muscle bike a demanding outing, on an e-bike a morning. You come back down barely pedalling.

04

Level 3 · The Nebrodi ridge

The park's most spectacular route runs high along the ridge, between 1,300 and 1,700 metres: Portella Femmina Morta, Lake Maulazzo inside the beech forest, the Biviere di Cesarò, the woods of Mangalaviti, and views that hold Etna to the south and the Aeolians to the north together. Mostly compact dirt track, with stony sections. One thing must be said, though: you don't get there pedalling from the coast. The bikes go up by car, you start at Portella and ride at altitude — which is how everyone does it, organised tours included.

05

Range, honestly

Manufacturers quote wide ranges, but climbing drains. On routes with a thousand metres of ascent, real range falls well short of the catalogue figure, and depends on weight, tyre pressure, the assistance level you use and the age of the battery. Practical rule: climb on high assistance and descend with it off, and plan the ride knowing the return is downhill. There are no charging points up in the Nebrodi.

06

When to go

At altitude the good season runs from May to October: earlier there's still damp and mud, later the days shorten and forest tracks turn slippery. In high summer the mountain is the right choice precisely because the coast is hot: at 1,400 metres, in August, the riding is fine. On the coast, from June to September, go out early or after six.

07

The rules, which matter here

The Nebrodi Park is a protected area: you ride on forest tracks and open routes, not off-trail. The grazing horses and cattle are free animals, not scenery: slow down and give them room. No fires, no litter. And a helmet, which on an e-bike isn't a detail: you reach speeds higher than you expect.

How hire works

E-bikes are hired from the property, for half a day or a full day. Available models, rates, helmets and formulas are agreed when you enquire: message us and we'll tell you what's free and which ride makes sense for your day, based on the weather and how long it's been since you last cycled.

Hire is open to everyone, not only to people staying with us. B&B and apartment guests get priority on availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can you hire e-bikes in Capo d'Orlando?

Yes: we hire e-bikes for half a day or a full day, starting from the property in the town centre. Models, rates and availability are agreed when you enquire, on +39 392 800 8005, WhatsApp included.

Can you reach the Nebrodi by e-bike from Capo d'Orlando?

To the hill villages such as Naso, Ficarra or San Marco d'Alunzio, yes: about twenty kilometres and five hundred metres of ascent, within anyone's reach with electric assistance. For the Nebrodi ridge, which runs between 1,300 and 1,700 metres, it's better to drive up with the bikes and ride at altitude.

Do you need to be fit for an e-bike excursion?

No — that's the point of electric assistance: climbs that would demand training on an ordinary bike become accessible. You do need to be able to ride a bike and be comfortable descending, which an e-bike doesn't help you brake.

What's the best season for cycling in the Nebrodi?

May to October at altitude, when the forest tracks are dry and the days long. In high summer the mountains are more pleasant than the coast: at 1,400 metres you can ride comfortably even in August.
