In an emergency: 112
In Italy the single number for every emergency is 112. An operator answers and routes the call to whoever is needed — ambulance, police, fire brigade — and it works even from phones with no credit. Where to go for urgent care

The hospital emergency department for this stretch of coast is at Sant'Agata di Militello, about twenty minutes west by car; the other hospital in the area is at Patti, to the east. If in doubt, don't decide yourself where to go: call 112 and they will tell you.
Out-of-hours doctors
The continuità assistenziale service — what everyone calls the guardia medica — covers the hours when family doctors aren't available: nights, weekends and public holidays. In Capo d'Orlando it is based in via Mancini. It's for things that can't wait until Monday but aren't emergencies: a high fever, a pain that won't settle, an urgent prescription.
Pharmacies and the duty rota
There are several pharmacies in town, between the centre and via Consolare Antica. Outside opening hours a duty rota operates: one pharmacy in the area stays on call, and the schedule is posted in the window of every pharmacy — the fastest and most reliable way to find out which one is open tonight. In summer many extend their evening hours.
Police and law enforcement
The town has stations for the Carabinieri (contrada Santa Lucia), the Polizia di Stato (via Piave) and the Guardia di Finanza (via Lucio Piccolo); the municipal police are at the town hall and also handle parking and traffic. The nearest fire brigade is at Sant'Agata di Militello. Reports and lost property are handled in person, with ID.
At sea
For any emergency on the water — a boat in trouble, a person in the sea, a sighting — the number is 1530, the Coast Guard: free and always staffed. Capo d'Orlando has a local Coast Guard office on the San Gregorio shore. On the Aeolians, expect fewer services

Lipari has a hospital and several pharmacies; the smaller islands have reduced services, often a single doctor and limited hours, and serious cases are transferred by helicopter or patrol boat. Practical consequences: bring enough of any medication you take regularly for the whole stay, because you may not find it on an island; and if you have a condition needing care, factor that in when choosing which island. If you're coming from abroad
Visitors from EU countries should bring their European Health Insurance Card, which gives access to public healthcare on the same terms as residents. Visitors from outside the EU should have travel health insurance: urgent care is provided regardless, but it is then charged. In pharmacies, many medicines require a prescription from an Italian doctor.
