The rock and the museum
Lipari's Castle holds one of the Mediterranean's most important archaeological museums: the layered settlement sequence of the acropolis and the necropolis collections tell six thousand years of routes between Sicily and the Aegean.
The archipelago's only town
Lipari isn't a village: it's a small town of ten thousand people, with shops open all year, buses, pharmacies and a hospital. It's the administrative centre of the Aeolians and the island people base themselves on to move among the others: the most frequent connections to Vulcano, Salina, Panarea and Stromboli leave from here. If you have one day and want to see a lot, this is where you get off.
Marina Corta and Marina Lunga
The two harbours tell two different Liparis. Marina Lunga is the hydrofoil and ferry port, functional. Marina Corta is the square on the water beneath the castle rock, boats pulled up on the shore, a small church and a few tables: it's where you sit in the evening, and it's the island's postcard.
Beaches and viewpoints
Canneto, north of town, is the most equipped bay: lidos, rentals, and the starting point for coves reachable only by sea. On the west side, Valle Muria is reached by a steep descent or by boat and is the place for sunset. And on the road to Quattropani lies the Quattrocchi viewpoint, looking out to the Pietra Lunga and Pietra Menalda stacks with Vulcano behind: it's the photograph everyone knows of the Aeolians without knowing it was taken here — and those two stacks are the «wandering rocks» in Nolan's Odyssey. The north side
Acquacalda and Porticello still live in the pumice landscape: white quarries sheer over the sea, and the Rocche Rosse obsidian flow, which you can walk up to the crater of Monte Pilato.

Can you see Lipari in one day?
The centre and a viewpoint, yes; adding the Rocche Rosse trail or the west-coast beaches takes the full day, best with a scooter or local buses.
