The best beaches in Capo d'Orlando
There is no «most beautiful one» — there's the right one for your day. Within two kilometres of coast the seabed, exposure and depth all change: here's which to choose for children, for snorkelling, for windy days and for sunset.
«The most beautiful» is the wrong question
Within two kilometres of coast everything changes here: sand to the east, pebbles below the headland, a seabed that shelves gently on one side and drops away on the other. There is no single best beach — there's the one right for your day, which depends on who you are, what the wind is doing and what time it is. This page answers by case, not by ranking.
With children: the eastern shore
Towards San Gregorio and onwards east the seabed is sandy and shelves slowly: you can walk a long way in shallow water, which is exactly what small children need. It's also where local families go, and that's usually the best signal there is. The village of San Gregorio →
For snorkelling: below the headland
On the opposite side, at the foot of Monte della Madonna, the bottom turns to pebbles and the water deepens immediately. This is the stretch for mask and fins: rock, fish, and good visibility when the sea has been calm for a few days. You'll want reef shoes: walking barefoot into pebbles is not a pleasant experience.
When it's windy: east, always
The rule that saves the most days. This coast faces north: when the tramontana blows, the sea in front of the town gets up quickly and turns cloudy. At sunset: the seafront and the sea stacks

Where fewer people go
Move away from the centre in either direction and you'll find stretches of free beach with far fewer people: five minutes by car is enough. And then there's the hour, which matters more than the place: after six the beaches empty almost everywhere, the water stays warm and the light improves. If you want quiet, change the time before you change the beach.
Serviced or free
Along the seafront and towards San Gregorio there are lidos with umbrellas, loungers and rentals; further out you'll find the free stretches. Neither is the right answer: it depends whether you want services or space. One practical detail nobody mentions: natural shade here is almost non-existent, so on a free beach an umbrella is a necessity, not an accessory.
And the Aeolian beaches?
They're a different matter, and worth knowing in advance: out there you go for the black sand of Vulcano and Stromboli, for Pollara on Salina, for Cala Junco on Panarea.
