When to visit Capo d'Orlando: the right month for each trip

In August you come for the sea and find half of Italy. In September the water is warmer than in June and prices have dropped. In October, the feasts. Month by month: temperatures, sea, crowds and what's happening.

The short answer

If you're coming for the sea with a free calendar: June or September. If you're coming for the Aeolians: May-June or September, when the sea is calm and the ferries aren't stormed. If you're coming to eat and see the real villages: October. If your dates are fixed by work: August is fine, but book months ahead and accept the crowds.

Summer: July and August

Highs around 30-33 °C, higher when the sirocco blows, with coastal humidity you can feel. The sea reaches 26-27 °C: you can swim at any hour. The town is alive every evening — concerts in Piazza Matteotti, open-air cinema, a seafront busy until late. In exchange: crowded beaches, full hydrofoils, restaurants to book, and no parking. Ferragosto (15 August) is the absolute peak, with the sea procession of the Madonna di Porto Salvo and fireworks.

June and September: the best compromise

These are the two months we recommend first. In June the air is around 27-28 °C, the sea 23-24 °C — cool at first, perfect by month's end — and the days are the longest of the year: there's still sun at 8:15pm. In September the reverse happens, in your favour: the water has stored heat all summer and still sits around 25 °C, often warmer than June, while the beaches have emptied and prices have fallen.

October: the month nobody considers

It's the favourite of the people who live here. The sea stays swimmable until mid-month for anyone unafraid of 22-23 degrees, the air sits around 24 °C, and everything happens: the Nebrodi food festivals — chestnuts, mushrooms, hazelnuts, black pork — and on 22 October the patron saint's feast, with the dawn pilgrimage up the 230 steps and the fair in town. The villages become themselves again, and you sleep for half what August costs. The food festivals →

Winter: November to February

It isn't the sea season, it's the citrus season: from November to April the coastal strip smells of lemons, and it's when the Costa Tramontana lemon is picked. Highs stay mild, around 15-16 °C, but this is when the rain concentrates. It can snow in the Nebrodi, and the villages under snow are worth the trip. It's also the season of the most intense feasts: Saint Sebastian at Tortorici in January, the silent procession of San Calogero on 5 February.

Spring: March to May

The best season for walking. The Nebrodi are green and full of water — the Catafurco waterfall is at its fullest — the islands are in flower and the volcano trails can be done without the heat. The sea stays cold until mid-May. Dates to note: the Babbaluti of San Marco d'Alunzio on the last Friday of March and, at Easter, the Holy Week rites at San Fratello.

The sea: when you can actually swim

Indicative water temperatures on this coast: May 19-20 °C (for the brave), June 23-24 °C, July 25-26 °C, August 26-27 °C, September 25 °C, October 22-23 °C. The real swimming season therefore runs from mid-June to mid-October — a month longer than most visitors assume.

And the Aeolians?

The islands run on their own calendar, dictated by the sea. From May to September connections are frequent and crossings almost always run. In winter the service thins out and cancellations for rough seas are normal: you can still go, but keep a day's margin. The Stromboli climb season is March-October; the Gran Cratere on Vulcano can be climbed all year, with different time windows in summer and winter. Which island to choose →

Booking: how far ahead

A practical rule for this coast: for August, book between January and March — around Ferragosto the central properties have been full for months. For June and September, four to six weeks is enough. For October you'll almost always find something, except the weekend of the 22nd and the last one of the month, when the Chestnut Festival fills the Nebrodi. Rooms and apartments →
