The Aeolians of thirty years ago
Filicudi is the one you visit once you've seen the others and want to understand what they used to be. A few hundred inhabitants, one road, mule tracks and cultivated terraces climbing to Fossa Felci (774 m), the extinct volcano that fills most of the island. There is no nightlife, and for many that is exactly the point.
Capo Graziano
On the promontory south of the harbour stand the remains of one of the most important prehistoric villages in the Mediterranean: Bronze Age oval huts, excavated and still legible, which gave their name to an entire archaeological culture — the «Capo Graziano culture». It's a twenty-minute walk from the port.
Zucco Grande, the abandoned village
On the north-east flank, reachable only by mule track, is a hamlet whose inhabitants left in the 1960s, emigrating to Australia and America. Roofless houses, terraces returned to the maquis, silence. The path from Rocca di Ciauli is one of those that stays with you.
The Bue Marino and La Canna
From the sea the island changes face. The Grotta del Bue Marino is a cavity in the cliff where the water glows blue from below — the name comes from the monk seal, which lived here. A little further out rises La Canna, a spire of rock standing out of the sea like a finger. You can only see both by boat, which is why people hire one on Filicudi.

Is Filicudi right for nightlife?
No. Filicudi is one of the quietest islands in the archipelago: a few hundred inhabitants, one road, a handful of restaurants in the hamlets. For evening life, Lipari or — in August — Panarea offer more.

A base in the centre — and everything else becomes a day trip.
