The beaches of Stromboli
Stromboli's beaches are as black as the volcano that made them, and they all lie on the inhabited side: the other flank is the Sciara del Fuoco, where you don't land.
Ficogrande and Scari
The village's two beaches: dark sand and pebbles, with the stack of Strombolicchio in front. You walk there from the centre, and the seabed drops fast.
Black sand and sun
Volcanic sand absorbs heat like nothing else: in the middle of a summer day it's impassable barefoot. Better early morning or after five, which is also when the light on the volcano is best.
Below the Sciara
The north-west flank, where the incandescent blocks come down, isn't for swimming and isn't approached: sunset boat trips keep a safe distance, and it's still a spectacle.
Ginostra
On the far side of the island, reachable only by sea, is the smallest harbour in the world and no equipped beach: you swim off the rocks.
