The trails
From Portella Femmina Morta several easy, well-marked routes set out, suitable for families too: the lake loop is the simplest, nearly flat, walkable in a couple of hours with stops. The surface is even dirt track.
The seasons
Summer: refuge from the heat, meadows and beech shade. Autumn: the forest's foliage, and mushrooms (regulated picking — a permit is required). Spring: blooms and streams in spate. Winter: frequent snow and spectacular scenery, but check the mountain roads first.
Common-sense rules
The horses are used to people but they are free animals: photograph them, don't touch or feed them. This is the Nebrodi Park: no fires, rubbish goes home with you.
Before you set out
